Reference: CAESAREA-PHILIPPI
American
A city three or four miles east of Dan, near the eastern source of the Jordan; anciently called Paneas, now Banias, from an adjacent grotto dedicated to Pan, from which one of the sources of the Jordan flowed. It stood where the mountains south-west of Hermon join the plain above lake Huleh, on an elevated plateau surrounded by ravines and water-courses; and its walls were thick and strong. It was enlarged and embellished by Philip the tetrarch of Trachonitis, and called Caesarea in honor of Tiberius Caesar; and the name Philippi was added to distinguish it from Caesarea on the Mediterranean. Our Savior visited this place shortly before his transfiguration, Mt 16:13-28; Mr 8:27-38; Lu 9:18,27. After the destruction of Jerusalem, Titus here made the captive Jews fight and kill each other in gladiatorial shows. In the time of the crusades it underwent many changes, and is not a paltry village amid extensive ruins.

When Jesus came into the neighborhood of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of man is?" They replied, "Some say 'John the Baptist'; others, however, say that 'He is Elijah'; others, 'Jeremiah,' or 'One of the Prophets.'" read more. "And who do you say that I am?" he asked them. So Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." "Blessed are you, Simon, Son of Jonah," said Jesus; "for flesh and blood have not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven! "Moreover I say to you that you are Petros (a rock), and on this petra (rock) I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against her. "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind upon the earth shall be bound in the heavens, and whatever you loose upon earth shall be loosed in the heavens." Then he enjoined his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. After this Jesus the Christ began to show his disciples how he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things at the hands of the elders and chief priests and Scribes, and be put to death, and on the third day be raised again. Then Peter took him aside and began to reprove him, saying. "God forbid, Master! That shall never befall you." But he turned and said to Peter. "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me, because you are not intent on what pleases God, but what pleases men." Then Jesus said to his disciples. "If any man wishes to come after me, let him renounce self, take up his cross, and follow me. For he who wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What will it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man is about to come in the glory of his Father, and his angels with him, and then will he reward each one in accordance with his actions. Solemnly I tell you, some of those who are standing here shall not taste death, till they have seen the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
From there Jesus and his disciples went to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, and on the way he began to question his disciples saying, "Who do people say I am?" And they told him. "Some say John the Baptist, others, Elijah, and others that you are one of the prophets." read more. And he continued questioning them, "But you yourselves, Who do you say I am?" Peter in reply said to him, "You are Christ." Then he strictly charged them not to say this about him to any one; and he began to explain to them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests, and the Scribes, and be put to death, and after two days rise again. This he told them quite openly. Then Peter took him and began to rebuke him. But he turned round, and looked upon his disciples, and rebuked Peter. "Get thee behind me, Satan," he said, "for your thoughts are not God's thoughts, but man's." Then summoning the crowd to him, with his disciples. he said: "If any man wishes to follow me, let him renounce self, take up his cross, and so follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever, for my sake and the gospel's, loses his life will save it. For what shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own life? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his life? Whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this unfaithful and wicked generation, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
Now it happened that while he was praying by himself, the disciples were with him, and he asked them a question. "Who do the crowd think I am?"
"But I tell you truly there are some of those standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God."
